Background:
St Paul's CofE (C) Primary School has its origins in 1825 when a national school was built in Garden Street. It was extended to include infants in 1831 and the main part of the school's present structure was erected in 1845. The toilets were replaced and a staffroom provided in 1974, and the roof was replaced using the old slates, the floors carpeted and the bell tower removed in 1987. A replacement building is due to be built on the same site within the next few years. Extra-curricular activities include art, chess, French and football. School visits are arranged to places of interest and pupils are encouraged to develop interests in music, PE, dance, drama, art and craft. Pupils in Years 3 and 4 have swimming lessons, and there is the opportunity to learn the recorder from Year 3, violin from Year 4 and clarinet or flute from Year 5.
