Background:
The Friary School was founded in 1892 as a fee-paying institution for girls. It has since undergone several relocations and changes of status, until being designated a mixed comprehensive school and settling on its present site in 1973. The school buildings include a theatre, music, technology and computer suites, a language laboratory and a sports centre, which incorporates a hall, swimming pool, squash courts, sauna and solarium. Lunchtime and after-school activities include team sports, computing, climbing, drama, life saving, music, photography, reading, and trampolining. There are many lunchtime and after-school activities which are open to all pupils. Advantage is taken of its splendid facilities to include: athletics, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, hockey, life saving, music, netball, orienting, photography, reading, rugby, soccer, squash, swimming, tennis and trampolining. The school aims to enable its students to gain a foundation of knowledge, skills and an understanding of the world, which will serve their own particular needs and prepare them for adult life.
