Background:
The school lies in Staffordshire's moorlands district, 10 miles south of Stoke on Trent. It was originally founded as a small secondary modern school in 1964 and became comprehensive in 1972. Facilities include a swimming pool and four computer rooms equipped with multi-media pentium networked machines. there is an emphasis on music and the arts, with regular dramatic and musical events staged during the school year. It runs a variety of IT-related courses and its Young Engineers Club has a 'national reputation'. The geography department organises regular field trips to Malta, and there are annual visits to France and Spain with the modern foreign languages department. The school has received a Sportsmark for its wide range of extra-curricular sports activities and has won national Young Engineers awards three times. This is a 'friendly school where consideration for others is encouraged, and there is a firm approach to good discipline, a requirement for all students to have a strong work ethic, and fairness when dealing with issues'. The school is over-subscribed, receiving 1.7 applications for each place.
