Background:

Established in 1957, the school became comprehensive in 1971, with major extensions and a sports hall. Pupils come from an 'attractive' area of large commuter villages and smaller rural settlements. New buildings are planned for the sixth form, which has expanded significantly in recent years and three in four (75%) pupils now stay to study A-levels or BTEC courses. The school is 'strongly supported' by the community as well as by local businesses and organisations, and is marginally over-subscribed. It has a 'well-equipped' resources centre with information technology used in and out of school time. It is 'strong in a variety of sports', with a 'considerable' programme of fixtures and pupils competing at county and national level. There is 'growth' in arts, music and drama, and regular performances are given. 'We encourage pupils to establish high expectations. Whatever their ability or interests, we give them time and support, deliberately fostering friendly relationships and a sense of orderly behaviour. Parental support and involvement is strongly encouraged'.
