Background:
Built in 1974, Barnfields Primary School is located on the south eastern side of the county town of Stafford. Located in a residential area, the school is set within 'large grounds which have been extensively landscaped'. The school is 'very popular'. Barnfields has been designated by the DfEE as 'a particularly successful school' and was awarded Beacon School Status in September 1998. The school now provides training courses for serving teachers focusing on the 'development of children's higher order literacy skills by use of the school library'. There are 'many' extra-curricular activities ranging from chess to netball. The school's netball and football teams hold several local awards. Barnfields is an 'active member' of the local, and wider, community. It has 'very strong links' with a local special school, local pensioners' groups and all local services, especially the police. The school has links with primary schools in Dijon and Marseille. Barnfields supports Barnados and every year sends used school uniform to Liberia, gives financial assistance to a Nigerian primary school, as well as supporting Help the Aged, RNIB and many other charities.
