Background:
Opened on the outskirts of Tamworth in 1979, Amington Heath Primary has an open plan design in the main building and four portable classrooms. Surrounding the school are 'extensive' playing fields, three playgrounds and a wildlife conservation area. The school runs soccer and cricket teams and competes in the Tamworth schools athletics tournaments. They recently won the soccer league and were Tamworth's 1996 six-a-side champions. All junior pupils are taught to swim. In addition to sports, the staff run extra-curricular computers and homework clubs, an orchestra and a choir. Amington Heath has participated in musical productions in the National Indoor Area, National Exhibition Centre and Symphony Hall in Birmingham. In a unique initiative for Staffordshire, a Japanese intern spent six months at the school teaching pupils and staff about culture in Japan.
