Background:
Purpose-built in January 1990; situated in Tunstall, an inner-city area and the most northerly of the six towns comprising the 'Potteries' of Stoke-on-Trent; many parents employed in the pottery, but increasing unemployment. Built following amalgamation of two old school buildings in Burslem and Tunstall: nursery class of 25 places, two reception classes, four Key Stage 1 classes (due to expansion), and four Key Stage 2 classes. Extra-curricular activities: football, netball, cross-country, swimming, athletics; local champions in 2003/2004; also chess, gymnastic and dance. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place. DfES achievement award (2001, 2002, 2003); training school status. Ethos: 'Positive ethos based on Gospel values and the teachings of Jesus; respect for each other and property; praise for all achievements, however small; and a strong sense of purpose and teamwork'.
